It is a day where the majority of American want to give away their money. Are you preparing your business to be one of their places? Called “Black Friday” because, for many businesses, the increased revenue enables them to be profitable (in the black) for the first time all year. Whether you are profitable or not, people are planning on spending a ton of money the day after Thanksgiving. Are you prepared to take advantage of the day? Even if you have planned, there are a still a few things you can do to take advantage of the day. Towards that end, I offer the Business Owner’s Procrastination Guide to Black Friday Preparation. First, Create Multiple Offers. Yes, “30% off the entire store” deals are effective, but for the biggest impact, focus on multiple points of interest. Highlight a specific brand with a percentage off. Create a section for “buy one, get one’s”. Offer a discount if shoppers bring in canned food for a local shelter. Multiple offers provide multiple reasons for people to visit. The only don’t is, “Don’t be boring.” Second, Flood Social Media. I would never recommend that your feed be solely deals and marketing, but this is the week to do it. 2-3 times a day, share what you have planned for Black Friday. However, do this. Tell a story with it. Be sure to picture a staff member alongside the deals to make it personal, and spend some money on Facebook ads. Really, it may be the only way for folks to see your deals in their feed. Third, Embrace the Holiday. Get your staff to dress in holiday garb on Friday. Wear ugly sweaters. Have the place decorated with trees and candy canes and anything else holiday related. Document the day on social media. On Friday, flood your pages with great pictures and customers/patients winning prizes. More than anything else, make Black Friday fun. An environment of joy is appropriate. Put these measures in place, and then email me to let me know how it goes at [email protected]. Gordon Duncan is the CEO/Consultant of ProSight Success. ProSight offers resources to put you back in control of your practice. P.S. ProSight Success has a 7 volume playbook to put all of these things in place. In fact, we recently published this system in paperback. It has been called the “Optometric Textbook for the 21st Century”. Typically, this resource costs $199, but in light of seeing another practice fatality, I have cut its cost 50%. From now until the end of the year, you can purchase the ProSight Success System in paperback for $100. This 2 lb. (over 300 pages of resources) playbook has been #1 in 7 different countries, and it’s the step by step process that the doctor above walked through. P.S.S. If you can’t afford these investments, ProSight offers a free e-book to get you started. Just go to www.profitableeyecare.com to get your copy If your revenue (deposits) dropped 10% this year, you will need a 30% increase in patients to sustain your personal income according to a recent study. That is insane. Essentially, if your deposits drop, you better have a plan to grow your patient base or you will make less money next year. Why will this affect your income? Because you will have less revenue to cover office expenses, so profits will drop which will affect your salary whether you own the practice or not. What to do? Invest in yourself first, even if you have to spend your own money. Get a mentor. Hire a consultant. Read materials that will help you grow your practice. But showing up to work every day is not enough. Something has to change. Some new action has to take place. Towards that end, ProSight offers resources to put you back in control of your practice. My parents owned two flower shops in the 70’s and 80’s, and that’s where I first learned about running a business. The flower industry didn’t yet have online florists, min-flower shops in grocery stores, or floral subscriptions services. It was just hard work, marketing, and creativity. They were passionate about flowers, they loved that they could care for people through their art, and they loved making people happy. Despite similar challenges to your business (online, malls, etc), my parents’ 3 principles mentioned above are still fundamental for you and your business. Try them out and watch your business grow. Hard Work – Are you the hardest working professional in your industry? If you are not, your lesser talented competition has the advantage. Don’t give away your gifting and talent to someone who works harder than you. When talent and hard work meet, great results are accomplished. Marketing – My parents were old-fashioned (back when old-fashioned was all there was). They used the yellow pages. You have social media. They put out door hangers. You have email lists. They sent “thank you” cards. You should still do this. Either way, your community’s awareness of your business is in the most part up to you. Word of mouth doesn’t start until there is something to talk about. Creativity – My parents were artists, and their medium were flowers. No two arrangements looked the same, and they took pride in their work. How can you approach your business this way? If you are a frame seller, do you see the match between your patient’s face, their prescription, and their fashion as an artistic expression? Do you see your customer service as artistically tailoring your patient/customer’s needs as art? If you do, you will stand out. The business landscape has greatly changed in the last 20 years. The fundamentals of success have not. Approach each day with hard work, marketing, and creativity to stand out above your competition. My parents did and were successful. -- Gordon Duncan is the CEO/Consultant of ProSight Success. He has worked in the eye care industry for nearly 20 years. Does your physical health match your medical advice for others? If not, did you know that your lack of health might be hurting your business as much as yourself? A little story, I grew up going to tiny, rural churches in the south where the pastors loved to preach about the evils of alcohol (no commentary on your choices – just a story). Often, these events would be followed by a covered dish dinner. One time, after such a sermon, there was pie-eating contest that followed and multiple people pigged out eating a whole pie. I thought to myself, “Wait a minute. Didn’t the pastor just say that drinking too much alcohol was a sin? I think I just saw him eat a whole pie.” Convictions on preaching and alcohol aside, your patients are astute. They are more educated than any patient base at any other time in history. Yes, webMD sometimes gives bad advice, but people read about their conditions. They care about their diets. They train hard and want to live happier, healthier lives. When their doctors or medical professional’s health don’t line up with the medical advice and care being offered, they go somewhere else and spend their money somewhere else too. So, what to do? Here are a couple of tips. First and foremost, I encourage you to pursue a healthy lifestyle for your own sake. Mix in regular exercise with temperate eating. If your own doctor has encouraged you to lower your cholesterol and blood pressure through a change of eating habits, do it. Don’t put off your health for a day you don’t know will come. Second, share your health journey with your patients, employees, and co-workers. Creating a health-conscious work environment makes for an enjoyable workspace, and it also demonstrates to the patient base that what you preach, you also practice. Being a personally healthy medical professional demonstrates that you care about other’s health as much as you care about their dollar. It shows that you believe in what you talk about so much, that you will follow your own advice. However, not caring for your health is a danger to yourself and perhaps a danger to your business. Tomorrow, I will run the Richmond Marathon. Endurance running is hobby and a side passion. It keeps me healthy and goal oriented. It makes me choose healthy eating and living as I approach 50, and I just love it. Once I began marathoning, I realized that there are so many parallels between endurance running and running a business, between running and raising a family, and between running and leading even a church. For example, Running Require Prior Planning – My only significant injury occurred this year. After sitting through 4 hours of meetings, I put on my running gear and took off for a normal run. It started uphill, and at its peak, I tore my calf muscle. I should have taken a few moments to get some extra hydration and to stretch. 5 minutes of preparation would have saved me 2-3 weeks of pain. Leading your family, your business, or your church requires the same. Take the time to study, to think through your day, to plan it…just don’t sprint into the family, business, spiritual equivalent of a torn calf muscle. Training Prepares You for Challenges – One of most effective marathon training exercises are called intervals. This is when you alternate between sprinting and light running. These are intense bursts of activity coupled with a period of recovery. This discipline prepares the body for those long moments of endurance late in the marathon and enable the body to push at the end. Leading your family, business, or church requires the same. Preparing for challenges does not mean being pessimistic. It means scanning the horizon for seasonal obstacles. It means prepping for upcoming changes in your schedules or your staff or your facility. It means writing down barriers to growth and putting together plans to break through them. Training with Others Makes You Stronger– A marathon requires at least 4-5 twenty mile runs (if not longer). Running a few of those with a friend or training partner is essential. It staves off boredom, provides motivation, and keeps the long training cycles fun. There are also a million tips to learn from someone else. Leading your family, business, or church is easier when training with others. Find a mentor or find an associate. You need both. Find someone who is older and wise to give you insight to avoid mistakes, and find a friend who is walking the same path as you – that way you won’t feel alone. Approaching the daunting leadership of family, work, and spiritual life is hard. Training for something like a marathon or your equivalent helps both you be healthy in every area of life. You don’t have to be an endurance runner to do these things. A couch to 5k program teaches the same lesson. Walking regularly does the same. No matter what, all of your life requires planning, preparing, and training. Hit those 3 in one area and be more prepared for the others. Gordon Duncan runs, writes, preaches, and consults. You can learn more about his writing and consulting for the business world at www.prosightsuccessblog.com, and you can find his Optometric business system at www.prosightsuccesss.com. Additionally, you can find his resources for the church at www.simplesermonsolution.com Do you have a Chick-fil-a in your area? If you do, then you know that when you say, “Thank you,” you quickly receive a, “My pleasure.” It is just the way they do business. If you walk up to the counter at Starbucks, an employee is going to ask you, “What can we get started for you?” They view their drinks as creations, so as you order, they are going to create a work of art for you. These shared expressions have power, and when you create them, your customers/patients feel at home. They sense your desire to work with them, and they know that all of your employees are agreed in their attitude of service. So, where are areas you can create these expressions? Here are 3: Answering the Phone – This is customer service 101. Most of your employees will come from various business/retail backgrounds. Creating a welcoming phone greeting is absolutely necessary, and if its catchy enough, your patients/customers will appreciate it. Personal Greetings – When someone walks in the door, what do your employees say? When your sales people interact, what do they ask first? Are they asking common questions to produce common outcomes (welcoming and increasing sales)? Clichés are true: you only get one chance to make a first impression. Don’t miss that first chance to greet the people who are gracious enough to frequent your establishment. At Checkout – How do your people say “thank you”? Differentiate yourself from the rest of the business world. While a “thank you” is a must, don’t forget Chic-fil-a. Their welcome is now iconic. Makes yours. How do you figure all of these out? Simple, put together a leadership team you trust to come up with some possibilities. Create a suggestion box. Anything. You make the final decisions for your business, but company involvement is always best. One last thing: don’t forget that training is going to be necessary once you roll all of this out.
