As Prosight grew, we decided to seek out new training, add on new employees, and offer new services.

The election and Covid-19 are amazingly important issues for our country, and rightfully so, they are taking up a lot of people’s attention. 
 
But your business has to grow too, so the question is, “How do I get my business’ message out when everyone’s attention is focused on the election and the pandemic?”  Here are three tips.
 
On social media, focus on the big three:  Invest in others, educate more than you sell, and be consistent.
 
In your community:  Network and serve.  Go to events where you can meet people, and if there are service opportunities, be a part of them joyfully.
 
Email:  Send out encouraging, uplifting emails to your clients and potential clients.  Encouraging and uplifting is what’s needed so badly right now.
 
While the issues of the election and fighting Covid-19 are important, there is still some hope of marketing your business.  Do these three things consistently, and you have a chance to break through the chatter and market your business to your clients and potential customers.

How to Build Momentum In Your Eye Care Practice

​The other day, my wife and I were running an errand and we noticed a car broken down on the side of the road.  The driver was walking along side the car with the door open trying to steer. Another person was behind the car pushing with all his might.   They were near a busy intersection, so it was a dangerous situation.
 
Worried for their safety, Amy dropped me off so I could help them.  She has a big heart like that.  As I approached, they said help was on the way and what they really needed was an extra hand to push the car out of traffic.  So, I joined in helping to push.  It started slow, finally built some momentum, and ultimately, we were able to guide their car to a safe place while they waited for a tow-truck.
 
I’m always amazed when having to push a car.  Cars are heavy!  The average car weighs around 3,500 pounds.  That’s one and a half tons!  How in the world can two people push around that much weight, and why does it get easier once it starts moving?
 
Well, wheels definitely help because you just can’t push around a giant rock that weighs that much, but the secret lies in the power of momentum.  Once the car starts moving, it builds momentum. Momentum = Mass x Velocity. That means that once something gets moving, it builds more and more power, and becomes more difficult to stop.  Momentum is what causes an object to keep going.
 
So, once the two of us got the car moving a bit, it gained speed and was easily guided over to the side of the road.  It didn’t take a ton of strength.  It took a determined start, and the flat road sure helped as well!
 
Layman’s science lesson aside, building momentum is essential for your business as well.  The questions are, “How to start it, and how to maintain it?” The answers for starting and maintaining momentum in your business are illustrated in our little road-side rescue. 
 
First, make a determined decision.  Our friends with the car definitely made a decision to get it off the side of the road.  Their safety depended upon it.  That sense of urgency and need was what got them going.  You have to do the same for your business.  Make a determined decision to build it and connect it to a sense of urgency.  A sense of urgency comes from whatever need you are trying to meet.  If that need is big enough, then a matched sense of urgency will help you get going.
 
Second, enlist some help. A lot of solopreneurs feel like they have to do everything themselves.  And with a young or startup business, that is true.  But no one knows everything.  Just like the guy on the side of the road needed help pushing, so do you.  Connect with organizations like the Chamber of Commerce, seek out a mentor, barter or trade your services for others that will help you grow your business. You can’t do everything by yourself.
 
Third, take advantage of the momentum.  As the car started moving, it was easier to push and guide to the side of the road.  However, if we stopped pushing, it would stop moving.  Same thing for your business.  If you gain some momentum like new clients or social media exposure, keep going.  Don’t settle.  Return to that determined decision, enlist more help, and keep going until you reach your destination.  For a business, you can’t regain momentum.  You have to start all over from scratch. Don’t let that happen.  Lean into momentum!

How Eye Care Practices Can Maximize Week 52

​The eye care industry calls it “Week 52”.  It’s the last week for many of their patients to use their benefits before they expire on December 31st.  That means lots of eye exams and lots of pairs of glasses are going to be sold.
 
It also means that doctors and employees are going to be pushed to their limits.  As many patients as possible are going to be scheduled, hours are going to extended, and patience (and patients) are going to be tested.  The best practices thrive during this week, their staff perform well, and they end the year thriving financially.
 
What lessons can be learned from (and in preparation for) Week 52?
 
One:  No matter the nature of your business or practice, recognize that the last week of the year doesn’t have to be quiet.  Many, many customers and patients are active and not hibernating.  If your working, determine to make your clientele feel appreciated.  Love on them.  Offer specials.  Create discounted programs.  Just let them know that you are thankful that they are considering you in the last week of the year.
 
Two:  The same thing goes for your employees.  I’m sure many of them would love to have the week off, but if they don’t, shower them with support.  This is the time for bagels and pizzas and coffee.  Spend a few extra bucks to let them know that you think they are good employees and that you appreciate them.  You’ll see their efforts increase and their attitudes brighten.
 
Third:  Be thankful.  I know that lots of folks get the last week of the year off, but if you are open or working, being thankful is the only remedy to misery.  Start your day and end your day by writing down 3 things that you are thankful for (starting with having job)! Gratitude always defeats complaint.

No One Cared What I Had To Say - Don't Let Your Practice Be Me

​I was speaking at a local chamber of commerce event this week.  Dozens of business owners were there eating breakfast and drinking coffee.  Guess what I discovered?
 
Not one of them cared about what I had to say.
 
At first, I was offended.  How dare they?
 
But then, I figured it out.  They all were there to network.  They wanted to either connect with businesses and practices like their own or to grow their business by gaining new customers and patients.
 
So, I pivoted.  I told them, “I can see you guys are hungry, and I’m not talking about food.  You are all here because you want to figure out how to grow your business in this area.  You’re just waiting for me to finish so you can start talking to each other.”

Afterward, I met with as many owners as I could, and I shared some of my tips:
 
Distinguish yourself from the other practices.
Communicate your distinctions.
Solve problems other businesses aren’t solving.
